Positive Approaches to Behaviour (Calgary)
2025/2026 FMS Learning Series
Inclusion Alberta’s Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre presents:
Positive Approaches to Behaviour
Behaviour is one of the most powerful ways people express themselves and communicate their needs, feelings and experiences. Yet, too often, behaviour is mislabeled as challenging or complex, leading to misunderstanding, isolation or even punitive responses rather than meaningful support.
Join us in a session exploring how people with intellectual disabilities are frequently misunderstood and how we can shift our perspective to recognize behaviour as communication. Participants will be introduced to positive and practical approaches that can be used by families, FMS or FSCD staff and service providers to better understand and respond to communication. By changing how we see, consider and respond to behaviour; we can create environments where people feel understood, valued and are able to thrive.
Key concepts include:
- Reframing behaviour, by seeking to understand what being communicated
- Recognizing the impacts of loneliness and unmet needs
- Applying principles of Trauma-Informed-Care
- Supporting stability and belonging at home and in community
