Friendship, Belonging, and Community: Creating Pathways to Connection (Calgary)
2025/2026 FMS Learning Series
Inclusion Alberta’s Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre presents:
Friendship, Belonging, and Community: Creating Pathways to Connection
Friendships and social connections are at the heart of living a good life. They bring joy, support, and a sense of belonging, helping us weather challenges and celebrate milestones together. Yet too many people with intellectual disabilities experience loneliness and isolation, which deeply impacts health and well-being.
This engaging session will explore practical strategies for creating opportunities that spark community engagement and foster genuine relationships. Families, individuals and FMS or FSCD staff will gain tools to support people with intellectual disabilities in building authentic connections rooted in their unique interests and strengths. Together, we’ll discover how support staff can serve as bridges to friendship, and how communities can open doors to belonging.
Key takeaways:
- Fostering belonging and connection in everyday community life
- Using individual talents and interests as catalysts for relationships
- Creating inclusive opportunities through community pathways
- Supporting the development of natural and lasting friendships
