Positive Approaches to Behaviour
Workshop Presenter: Arne Fulton
Date: November 2, 2024
Time: 10:00am-3:00pm
Location: DoubleTree by Hilton 2120 16th Avenue NE
Behaviour serves as a form of communication, expressing needs, emotions, or thoughts that may not be conveyed through words. The mislabeling of individuals as having challenging behaviour or complex needs can result in their individual needs being overlooked, resulting in isolation or even punishment for their attempts to communicate.
Join us in a session where we discuss the critical issue of how individuals with intellectual disabilities are often misunderstood and mislabeled. We will introduce thoughtful and positive approaches, used by Inclusion Alberta in collaboration with families, individuals, FMS or FSCD staff and service providers.
By adopting positive approaches and reframing how communication is perceived and responded to, participants will be better equipped to support people to lead more stable and fulfilling lives in community and at home. The session will uncover key concepts and methods, such as understanding the connection between loneliness and unmet needs, applying Trauma-Informed Care practices, recognizing behaviour expression as a form of communication and reframing behaviour descriptions as a way of communication.
