Exploring Opportunities for Creating Meaningful Employment (Calgary)
2025/2026 FMS Learning Series
Inclusion Alberta’s Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre presents:
Exploring Opportunities for Creating Meaningful Employment
Employment is about more than just a pay cheque – it provides purpose, a sense of belonging, and chances to connect and build relationships. In Alberta, many individuals with intellectual disabilities face significant challenges in securing employment, often due to limited opportunities and support in finding and maintaining work. These barriers frequently lead to an 80% unemployment rate for people with intellectual disabilities.
This session will share inspiring stories from families who have utilized their networks, individualized funding (FMS or FSCD), and partnerships to create and sustain employment opportunities for their family members with intellectual disabilities. Attendees will leave with insights and practical strategies to pursue employment opportunities and collaborate with FMS/FSCD support staff to plan and take action. Families, individuals, FMS or FSCD staff are encouraged to attend and gain tools for supporting people with intellectual disabilities to secure and maintain meaningful employment.
Key concepts include:
- Visioning and planning for successful employment opportunities
- Identifying and creating employment opportunities through networks and community connections
- Using FMS or FSCD resources to establish and sustain jobs
- How to take action, engage with an employer, share the business benefits of inclusive hiring, and respond to “no”
