Disability Employment Awareness Month: Clara at Glendale Golf & Country Club

October 1, 2025

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and we are highlighting how Rotarians and local businesses are creating meaningful jobs for individuals with intellectual disabilities through Inclusion Alberta’s Rotary Employment Partnership.

Albertans with intellectual disabilities experience an unemployment rate of more than 70%. The Rotary Employment Partnership is creating life-changing job opportunities while providing an untapped labour market to Alberta’s business community. The partnership has created over 900 jobs to date in diverse fields such as trades, hospitality, manufacturing, childcare, culinary, the arts and office administration. Real work for real pay. Learn more about becoming an inclusive employer.

An inclusive employer since 2011, Edmonton’s Glendale Golf and Country Club has hired individuals with intellectual disabilities for many positions in both food services and in the clubhouse. This summer, they hired Clara, who has an intellectual disability, in their Turf Care Facility team where she has quickly become an invaluable member. Working alongside her teammates, Clara helps maintain the golf course in pristine condition, a standard The Glendale proudly upholds for its members and guests.

Renee Schmaltz, The Glendale’s Turf Care Team manager, says that Clara has been a key addition to the team, consistently contributing to an elevated experience for everyone who visits the course. Her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and positive attitude have made a notable difference, from maintaining tee stations and clubhouse grounds to lifting the spirits of the entire crew.

“The Glendale Golf and Country Club is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with The Rotary Employment Partnership, which made it possible for Clara to join us this season,” says Renee. “On behalf of the entire Turf Care Team — thank you, Clara. We’re lucky to have you.”

Clara says that her position at the Glendale has brought her a strong sense of joy and belonging. She enjoys working part-time each week and is an enthusiastic part of the team.
