SUMMARY:Positive Approaches - FMS Learning Series (Calgary)
DESCRIPTION:FMS learning SERIES 2023/2024 \nPresented by Inclusion Alberta’s Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre \nPositive Approaches\nSaturday 23 September\, 2023. 10:00am – 3:00pm \nInglewood Community Hall (1740 24 Ave SE\, Calgary\, AB \nRegister online here\, or contact Kate at 403-539-5869 or khughson@inclusionalberta.org \nArne Fulton\, Provincial Coordinator of the Complex Needs Initiative at Inclusion Alberta\, will be discussing the pressing issue of how people with intellectual disabilities are often misunderstood and labelled as having challenging behaviour or complex needs. This misidentification can result in the person’s needs being ignored\, isolation\, or even punishment for attempting to express themselves. Arne will share with attendees the meaningful and thoughtful positive approaches that Inclusion Alberta employs in collaboration with families\, individuals\, family-managed support staff\, and service providers. These approaches aim to foster stability and inclusivity for individuals with intellectual disabilities who are identified as having complex needs. \nParticipants in this session will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with complex needs and learn practical strategies to support their well-being and inclusion. By adopting positive approaches and reframing how to perceive and respond to communication\, participants will be equipped to support individuals with complex needs in leading more stable and fulfilling lives within their communities. \nDuring this session\, we will explore powerful concepts and methods\, including: \n\nUnderstanding loneliness and how it relates to unmet needs\nUsing Trauma Informed Care for a compassionate approach\nNormalizing behaviour expression as a means of communication\nReframing behaviour descriptions through a new lens of communication\n\nFamilies and FMS/FSCD staff are encouraged to attend. \nRegister online here.

SUMMARY:What you need to know: Visioning and planning for life after high school (virtual 2 part workshop for Central Alberta residents)
DESCRIPTION:Inclusion Alberta and Capabilities Connections are pleased to present this free two evening workshop for Central Alberta area families: What you need to know: Visioning and planning for life after high school \n\n\n\n\nWhen: June 6 and 8\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm \nWhere: Zoom \nTo register: Register online here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs children get older and become adults\, there are many new decisions and challenges that families experience in thinking of life immersed in community. People with developmental disabilities and their families need to consider what life looks like after graduation and where in community they will live\, study\, work and play. Planning for what life will look after high school and into early adulthood requires families to craft a compelling vision for a meaningful life. Experience tells us that a clearly crafted vision is one of the most potent and helpful means of ensuring a whole and inclusive life for your loved one with developmental disabilities. A clear vision serves as a guiding light\, helps people stay focused and safeguard a life from a special and separate pathway. No matter someone’s age or stage of life\, crafting or refining a future vision of a good life is a necessity. \nThis two-part workshop will provide an overview of crafting a life-enhancing vision and describe the initial plans and actions needed to move forward. This workshop will provide information on strategies for developing a network\, taking a person’s strengths and interests and turning them into possibilities for meaningful employment\, inclusive-post-secondary or recreation opportunities in the community\, including the possibility of moving for study or work. In particular\, how the flexibility and creativity allowed for by FMS can be used to the advantage of families and their family members with developmental disabilities. We encourage you to attend both sessions\, as they are meant to be one workshop. \nRegister online here.

SUMMARY:FMS Series Workshop: Positive Approaches (Calgary)
DESCRIPTION:Inclusion Alberta’s Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre presents: THE FMS LEARNING SERIES 2022/2023 \nPositive Approaches\nWhen: Saturday\, March 4\, 2023 | 10am – 3pm \nWhere: Inglewood Community Association Hall (1740 24 Ave SE\, Calgary) \nWorkshop Presenter: Arne Fulton\, Provincial Complex Needs Coordinator \nTo register: Register online here\, or contact Kate at 403-880-5951 or khughson@inclusionalberta.org  \nToo often\, the efforts of people with developmental disabilities to communicate their needs result in being identified as having challenging behavior or as having complex needs. Targeting and addressing behaviour in this way puts people at risk of having their needs ignored\, being isolated or openly punished for trying to express their needs. As a result\, individuals with developmental disabilities\, sometimes compounded by mental health and other challenges\, are often identified with complex needs and live very restricted and chaotic lives.  \nArne Fulton\, Provincial Coordinator of the Complex Needs Initiative\, will share how Inclusion Alberta works with families\, individuals\, family managed support staff\, and service providers to develop meaningful and thoughtful positive approaches. This session will explore concepts and methods that focus on developing positive approaches to support people with developmental disabilities identified with complex needs to have greater stability in their pursuit of an inclusive life in the community.  \nThe session will cover the following:  \n\nUnderstanding loneliness and its relationship to unmet needs \nTrauma Informed Care \nNormalizing expression as a means of communication \nReframing the description of behaviour by changing the lens through which we view communication \n\nFamilies and FMS staff are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.  \nRegister online here
