DESCRIPTION:Inclusion Alberta Family Resource Centre – Grande Prairie and Region and the Darrell Cook Family Managed Supports Resource Centre present the FMS Learning Series: \nPositive Approaches\nDate: Saturday February 12\, 2022 \nTime: 9am to 12pm \nVirtual – REGISTER HERE \nWorkshop Presenter: Arne Fulton\, Complex Needs Coordinator \nAll behaviour is a means of communication. When we start to uncover what the behaviour is trying to tell us\, we become much better at meeting the needs of people with developmental disabilities who have been labelled as having ‘challenging behaviours.’ \nToo often\, people with developmental disabilities’ efforts to communicate their needs result in behaviour that is identified as challenging or in the individual being identified as having complex needs. Targeting and addressing behaviour in this way puts people at risk of having their needs ignored\, being isolated or openly punished for trying to meet their needs. These approaches have brought stability\, home\, and more meaningful community engagement to support the lives of people with developmental disabilities identified with having complex needs. This session will explore concepts and approaches that focus on the importance of really getting to know people by listening fully with your body\, heart\, and mind to support changes that enable more meaningful and inclusive lives. \nThe session will cover: \n\nUnderstanding loneliness and its relationship to unmet needs and challenging behaviours\nTrauma Informed Care\nNormalizing behaviour as a means of communication to help understand what someone might be expressing\nReframing the description of behaviour by changing the lens in which we view communication\n\nFamilies and FMS staff are encouraged to attend. \nIf you require assistance registering\, contact Pat Winter at 403-539-8192 or dc-fms@inclusionalberta.org

A principle role of staff hired by families through FMS must be to facilitate community engagement\, membership and belonging to allow for the emergence of freely given relationships and friendships. \nThis session will explore: \n\nThe meaning and power of natural pathways\nStrategies for community engagement and inclusion through which relationships can emerge\nHow families and FMS staff can facilitate and encourage connections within the community\nHow to identify individual interests\n\nFamilies and FMS Staff are welcome to attend. \nIf you require assistance registering\, contact Pat Winter at 403-539-8192 or dc-fms@inclusionalberta.org
