Arne Fulton, Provincial Coordinator of the Complex Needs Initiative at Inclusion Alberta, will be discussing the pressing issue of how people with intellectual disabilities are often misunderstood and labelled as having challenging behaviour or complex needs. This misidentification can result in the person’s needs being ignored, isolation, or even punishment for attempting to express themselves. Arne will share with attendees the meaningful and thoughtful positive approaches that Inclusion Alberta employs in collaboration with families, individuals, family-managed support staff, and service providers. These approaches aim to foster stability and inclusivity for individuals with intellectual disabilities who are identified as having complex needs.
Participants in this session will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with complex needs and learn practical strategies to support their well-being and inclusion. By adopting positive approaches and reframing how to perceive and respond to communication, participants will be equipped to support individuals with complex needs in leading more stable and fulfilling lives within their communities.
During this session, we will explore powerful concepts and methods, including:
- Understanding loneliness and how it relates to unmet needs
- Using Trauma Informed Care for a compassionate approach
- Normalizing behaviour expression as a means of communication
- Reframing behaviour descriptions through a new lens of communication
Families and FMS/FSCD staff are encouraged to attend.
