Too often, the efforts of people with developmental disabilities to communicate their needs result in being identified as having challenging behavior or as having complex needs. Targeting and addressing behaviour in this way puts people at risk of having their needs ignored, being isolated or openly punished for trying to express their needs. As a result, individuals with developmental disabilities, sometimes compounded by mental health and other challenges, are often identified with complex needs and live very restricted and chaotic lives.
Arne Fulton, Provincial Coordinator of the Complex Needs Initiative, will share how Inclusion Alberta works with families, individuals, family managed support staff, and service providers to develop meaningful and thoughtful positive approaches. This session will explore concepts and methods that focus on developing positive approaches to support people with developmental disabilities identified with complex needs to have greater stability in their pursuit of an inclusive life in the community.
The session will cover the following:
- Understanding loneliness and its relationship to unmet needs
- Trauma Informed Care
- Normalizing expression as a means of communication
- Reframing the description of behaviour by changing the lens through which we view communication
Families and FMS staff are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.
