Anne Hughson sits in an office environment, this picture shows her from the shoulders up. She has blonde curly hair and light skin, is wearing a black shirt and a necklace. She is smiling. A passionate intellectual, tireless advocate and politically astute activist in the fields of intellectual disability, inclusion, and social justice, Dr. E. Anne Hughson was Associate Professor and Director of the Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies Program at the University of Calgary. She was a friend, colleague, advocate, intellectual leader, and community activist to many around the world.

In a career spanning more than 50 years, Anne worked tirelessly and critically, supporting families to create inclusive possibilities in the community for their loved ones, and giving them the tools to work within systems to create positive change. For the vast number of those 50 years Anne also devoted her time, expertise and talents to furthering the work of Inclusion Alberta. She established one of the first fully Inclusive Post-secondary Education Initiatives for individuals with intellectual disabilities at a university in Canada. Anne was a critical contributor to the development and expansion of inclusive post-secondary education opportunities across Canada and elsewhere. As the co-developer of Inclusion Alberta’s Family Leadership Development Series, she empowered families to be effective in overcoming barriers and shortcomings in human service delivery for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities. The Series helped families develop a clear vision for an inclusive life in community and renewed hope for a promising future for their loved ones. Her work has been recognized and replicated locally, nationally and internationally. She was a sought-after speaker, educator, and mentor in North America, Australia, Russia and many other countries.

Anne’s strength was her compassion, intelligence, and willingness to spend time, listen, question, and improve upon the strengths of others. This was particularly evident in the way she worked for change within the systems of human services through her mentorship of countless graduate and undergraduate students who carry on the legacy of her work as scholars, services deliverers, activists, and advocates around the globe.

This scholarship is established in memory of Dr. E. Anne Hughson, with the intention of building upon the immense legacy her dedication, brilliance and compassion gave us.

The Dr. E. Anne Hughson Memorial Scholarship will provide support to a deserving graduate student whose studies focus on community inclusion, advocacy, and social justice with and for persons with intellectual disabilities. Students from a broad range of disciplines may apply, but their studies and career goals must show a clear focus on inclusion, social justice, and intellectual disability in Canada or internationally.

Please support the establishment of this Scholarship in Anne’s name and memory by contributing at inclusionalberta.org/donate. Thank you.
