An update on Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)

Published Tuesday, July 3, 2018 2:00 pm

The Alberta government is making some changes to the Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program after hearing from parents and family members.

Listening sessions took place in May in both Calgary and Edmonton. More than 100 family members participated and provided feedback to the government on their experience with FSCD and ways to improve the program.

You can find more details in the “What We Heard” document attached to this post, and in the letter from Community and Social Services Minister Irfan Sabir.

Changes happening immediately:

  • Ending references to “parent training” and “parent coaching” language
  • Making parent involvement in specialized services optional – parents don’t have to become therapists, nor do they have to be in the room and participate when specialized services are provided to their child
  • Changes to FSCD policy, FSCD Program Outcomes Policy, Overarching Policies and Considerations Policy to confirm support for direct services to children
  • Sharing a FSCD toolkit with all families, which includes details on the program, services available and what parents can do if they have questions or concerns
  • A more transparent description of what specialized services are and what is available
  • Updated information, resources, forms and website content to improve access to information for parents and families about direct services to children.

Changes happening later this year:

  • Review of Multi-Discplinary Team (MDT) processes to identify improvements in order to support families
  • Updating training for FSCD staff, adding orientation training for staff
  • Full review of FSCD policy manual to ensure it follows legislation
  • Explore ways to increase service provider and FSCD staff capacity to ensure better access to services for families

More listening sessions will also be held across the province to identify improvements and allow FSCD staff to hear additional feedback.
