Regional Coordinator of Advocacy

Inclusion Alberta is a family advocacy organization committed to providing individuals with developmental disabilities and their families with the personalized advocacy they need to live a meaningful and inclusive life.

Families and individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with complex needs, require assistance in developing and implementing individualized plans to secure an inclusive life. The advocate also supports individuals and families to navigate and negotiate complex human service systems to the benefit of children and adults with developmental disabilities. These systems include education, health, justice, disability related supports and funding. The role of advocate is to also facilitate participation and membership in community life.

Under the direction of the Provincial Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement, this advocate will be responsible for:

  • supporting the development of a local family advocacy association, Inclusion Edmonton, in community development efforts focused on building capacity for inclusion;
  • ­supervising and coordinating Inclusion Alberta’s Calgary and Edmonton advocates and providing advocacy support to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the pursuit of fully inclusive lives in community.

Individual and Family Advocacy

  • Work directly with children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families to develop an inclusive vision then create and execute a plan to achieve inclusive community lives.
  • Provide personal and direct advocacy to families and individuals with developmental disabilities in their pursuit of the supports and services that enable inclusion.
  • Facilitate the participation of children and adults with developmental disabilities in community life.
  • Develop partnerships with a wide range of community, government and disability-related organizations.

Supervision and Coordination

  • Supervise and coordinate Inclusion Alberta advocates in Calgary and Edmonton.
  • Mentor and offer developmental growth opportunities for the advocates.
  • Coordinate, schedule and facilitate regional and provincial advocacy meetings.
  • Manage human resource responsibilities for the advocates.

Community Development

  • ­Work directly with Inclusion Edmonton members and their families to ensure they have the capacity to participate in the activities of the society.
  • Work with community organizations and businesses to enhance their capacity to include children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Develop and support the networking of families who are committed to pursuing inclusion.
  • Build family knowledge and capacity to capitalize on the resources available within their communities.

Inclusion Alberta

  • Identify potential family leaders and foster family leadership.
  • Coordinate with staff and programming for individual and family advocacy, community engagement and all other initiatives within Inclusion Alberta.
  • Complete contractual commitments and reporting obligations on time and accurately.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • a university degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience
  • demonstrated values-based training and a track record reflective of a commitment to inclusion
  • demonstrated knowledge and experience related to community development, community organizing and inclusive community participation
  • ability to facilitate collaboration across multiple community stakeholders
  • excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • ability to manage competing priorities
  • knowledge and understanding of Office 365 and ShareVision considered an asset
  • minimum of 5 years’ experience in individual/family advocacy
  • minimum of 5 years’ experience in a supervisory role

This position will be located in Edmonton. Candidates will require a reliable vehicle and the capacity to travel within Alberta on a regular basis.
