The Advocate for Persons with Disabilities will work with children, youth and adults with disabilities to enhance their well-being and quality of life in Alberta.

The Advocate is skilled at building critical relationships and engaging diverse stakeholders within the disabilities community to inform and address issues affecting persons with disabilities. The primary role of the Advocate is to assist individuals and families by providing referral, path-finding and issues resolution support.

Accountable to the Minster on legislative and functional matters and to the Deputy Minister for administrative matters, the Advocate will submit an annual report to the Minister summarizing the issues and concerns their office has addressed and suggestions for improvements or changes.

The Advocate’s background includes extensive related senior management experience with strengths in social programs, human services or advocacy and working with the disability community. Recognized for negotiation, mediation and issues resolution skills, they bring proven experience in consultation and stakeholder engagement.  They have established a reputation for inspiring a culture of excellence and mentoring teams to deliver service focused results. Innovative problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills and a systems approach will be critical to effectively manage and inform program, service and policy options to address the issues facing persons with disabilities.

The Advocate for Persons with Disabilities is appointed for a specified term by the Lieutenant Governor in Council under section 2(1) of the Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Act (Bill 205).  Remuneration is determined by the Minister and is typically at the Executive Manager 1 range of $125,318 - $164,691 annually ($4,801.47 - $6,310.03 bi-weekly).  A related degree is preferred.  Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
