Community Development Advocate, Advocacy, and Community Engagement

Inclusion Alberta, as a family advocacy organization, is committed to providing individuals with developmental disabilities and their families with personalized advocacy that contributes to a meaningful and inclusive life. 

Similarly, families and individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with complex needs, require assistance in planning and securing an inclusive life. Some of the means to an inclusive life include being able to maximally benefit from individualized funding and being engaged as a participatory and valued community member.  

This part-time position will be responsible, under the direction of the Provincial Coordinator of Community Engagement, to 1) support the development of a local community family advocacy association, Inclusion Medicine Hat, in their pursuit of creating an inclusive community, and 2) provide individual advocacy to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the pursuit of a fully inclusive life in community.

Duties and responsibilities

Community Development Advocate:

  • ­Work directly with Board Members and their families to ensure they have the capacity to participate in the activities of the society.
  • Work with community organizations and businesses to enhance their capacity to enable and facilitate the inclusion of children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Support the business of Inclusion Medicine Hat by ensuring agendas, minutes, reports and actions requiring follow-up are in place and completed
  • Ensure Board Members have the materials and resources they require to effectively participate on the Board
  • Develop and support the networking of families who are committed to pursuing inclusion.
  • Building family knowledge and capacity to learn how to use the resources available within their community.

Advocate:

  • Work directly with individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to think about, plan for and realize inclusive community lives
  • Serve as a resource and guide to families and individuals with developmental disabilities in their pursuit of supports and services that enable inclusion
  • Develop and support the networking of families who are committed to pursuing inclusion
  • Advocate with and for families and individuals in their efforts to nurture and develop inclusive communities

Inclusion Alberta:

  • Participate in and contribute to family leadership.
  • Coordinate with individuals, families, and community and with all other Inclusion Alberta initiatives.
  • Complete contractual commitments and reporting obligations on time.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provincial Coordinator of Community Engagement.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • a university degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience
  • demonstrated values-based training and a track record reflective of a commitment to inclusion
  • demonstrated knowledge and experience related to community development, community organizing and inclusive community participation
  • knowledge related to board development practices considered an asset
  • deep understanding of inclusion, and community capacity development
  • ability to facilitate collaboration across multiple community stakeholders
  • excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • ability to manage competing priorities
  • competent writing ability
  • knowledge and understanding of Office 365 considered an asset
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of event planning

Working conditions: This position will be located in Medicine Hat and area. Candidates will require a vehicle and the capacity to travel within Alberta on a regular basis. This is a part-time positon, with salary commensurate with experience. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted. Competition will close once suitable candidate is found.
